Commissions - Be Creative!

There are numerous ideas for commissioning a work of fine art. When you find yourself at a loss regarding anniversary, Christmas or birthday presents, use the list below to get the creative juices flowing:

How does it work ?

The first thing you need is an idea of what the commission is for, what size you think you would like and where it will reside on a wall. Together we will discuss these things and come up with the perfect match of idea and size, framed or unframed, and also the type of medium you would prefer.

If you have a favorite photograph, including vintage family photos, I can easily draw from photographic references. Old photos should be scanned at a very high resolution and are better if in focus. If you do not have a scanner I would be happy to scan the photos for you. Photos, if taken with a high resolution camera (at least 8 mega pixels), and with a good exposure and focus can be excellent resources. Snapshots are often of lesser quality. The better your reference photo (photos) are, the better the result! They are essential to the amount of detail a person can detect in the shadows and highlights, often diminished by the small pixel size of low resolution images.

Commissioning a work is fairly simple. If you don't have a good photo I would be very happy to provide my photography services to you. I prefer it if the person, pet or objects come to my studio in Adjala for a portrait sitting and photography session, (about 30 shots), or in the case of a still life, leave the objects with me to paint from life. It's nice to meet people in person, and talk about the project. At this point, or after I have spoken to you about drawing from your own references, a deposit of one half of the final price is collected by the artist for supplies and photography and is non-refundable and a contract is signed. Images can be combined and the price is determined by the size as well as the complexity of the final design. For example, the number of people etc.

A week later, about 4 or 5 prints are sent off to you and we discuss the favorites, narrowing it down to one image or several. I begin work and throughout the process will send you 2 - 4 images of the initial drawing until the drawing is 1/2 of the way completed. Being happy with the result you can pay the next installment and I will complete the art work sending a couple more progress photos. If you are unhappy at this point you may walk away.

Pricing

I am always happy to speak with you in regards to price. Generally a drawing in my detailed style takes anywhere from 30 to 50 hours for the smaller pieces and up to 100 hours for the larger. Having said this portraits of animals are generally less expensive than human portraits, but it really depends on the complexity of the project.

Prices includes photo session, (if necessary), 5 small prints, archival quality artist materials and packaging and emailed or mailed progress reports. Prices are exclusive of matting and framing, travel, postage and applicable taxes in Canada. Ontario residents pay 13% tax, Canadian residents outside of Ontario pay only 5% G.S.T.
